Do You Need a Tech Pack to Manufacture Clothing?

No. You do not need a tech pack to start manufacturing with NO FUGAZI. A sketch on paper, a moodboard of reference images, or a photo of a garment you want cut differently is enough to get a tailored quote and a sample made. We do the patterns and the fit development in house as part of the work.

Most manufacturers ask for a tech pack because it saves them work. A tech pack is a production document, not a creative one: it is the sheet a factory reads so it can cut, sew and finish your garment without guessing. Producing one takes technical drawing, graded measurements and garment construction knowledge that a first-time brand owner has had no reason to acquire yet.

We treat that as our job. Send whatever already exists and we turn it into a production-ready spec, then prove it with a physical sample before a single bulk piece is cut. If you do have a finished tech pack, even better: send it and we quote straight from it.

What a Tech Pack Actually Is

A production document, not a design one. Here is what is inside one, in plain terms.

A tech pack is the instruction sheet a factory works from. Nothing in it is creative. It exists so the person cutting the fabric and the person stitching the seams make the same garment you pictured, in every size, without stopping to ask you a question.

A complete one usually contains:

  • Flat technical drawings - front, back and detail views, drawn to proportion rather than styled.
  • A measurement chart - every point of measure, graded across your size range.
  • A bill of materials - the fabric, its composition and weight, plus every zip, drawcord, tape and thread.
  • Colourways - usually as Pantone references, so colour is not left to interpretation.
  • Construction notes - stitch types, seam finishes, linings, pocket bags, cuff and hem treatments.
  • Artwork and placement - print or embroidery files, sized and positioned in millimetres.
  • Labelling and packing - neck labels, woven tags, care labels, hangtags, and how the finished garment is folded and bagged.

That is a lot of technical work to produce before you have made a single piece, and it is where plenty of first orders stall. It is also work we already do every day. You do not have to clear it on your own before anyone will talk to you.

What You Can Send Instead

Any one of these is enough to get a tailored quote. More than one is better, and none of them need to be tidy.

A Sketch

Pencil, biro or tablet, it makes no difference. A rough drawing with a note on the fit you want is enough for us to quote and start a pattern. Photograph it and send the photo.

A Moodboard or Reference Images

Screenshots, saved posts, a shared board. Tell us what you like in each one - the shoulder line here, the fabric weight there - and we work from that.

A Garment You Already Own

Send us a piece you like the fit of, or photograph it with a tape measure across the chest and length. We replicate the fit and change what you want changed: heavier fabric, boxier cut, different trims.

Measurements

If you already know a fit that works on your customers, send its measurements. It removes the single biggest cause of sample revisions before we start.

Just the Idea, Written Down

The garment, the feel you are after and roughly how many. We ask the questions that fill the gaps, which is quicker than you guessing what a manufacturer wants to hear.

A Finished Tech Pack

Send it over and we quote directly from it. We flag anything that will not manufacture cleanly before you commit, rather than after your sample arrives.

What We Will Ask You to Decide

A tech pack is only a way of recording these six decisions. You can make them in a conversation instead, and we will explain the trade-off on each one before you choose.

Fabric Weight and Composition

The biggest single driver of how a garment feels in the hand. A light fleece hoodie and a heavyweight one are different products at the same price bracket. If you do not know the number, name the garment you want it to feel like and we match it.

Fit and Cut

Boxy or fitted, drop shoulder or set-in, cropped or long, wide leg or tapered. Say it in plain words. We translate it into a pattern and you check it on the sample.

Colour

Pantone references if you have them, a photo or a physical swatch if you do not. We colour match to Pantone, and custom-dyed fabric is available when no stock colour is right.

Decoration

Embroidery, screen printing, sublimation, DTF, chenille patches or acid wash. Each behaves differently on different fabrics, so we advise once we know the base cloth.

Trims and Labelling

Custom labels, woven tags, custom trims, zips and drawcords. Small decisions, but they are most of the difference between a branded garment and a printed blank.

Sizes and Quantity

Your size range and roughly how many per size. Our MOQ is 50 pieces, and specific designs, colours and fabrics can affect it, so tell us what you are planning and we will confirm.

Design support is part of manufacturing here, not a separate department you have to find first.

  • Tech pack creation - we build the production document your order is made from, working out the measurements, materials and construction that your references imply.
  • Pattern development - patterns cut from your measurements or from a garment you send us, then graded across your full size range so every size fits like the one you approved.
  • Fabric sourcing - we hold no stock garments, so fabric is sourced or custom-dyed per order to the composition, weight and colour your garment needs.
  • Fit development - the sample stage exists to get the fit right. We adjust the pattern rather than the single garment, so the change carries through every size in bulk.

Then the manufacturing itself: cut, stitched and finished by hand, through four stages of quality control - fabric inspection, in-process checks, post-production inspection and a final pre-shipment review.

What Happens After You Send It

The same five steps whether you arrive with a finished tech pack or a photo of a napkin. Only the amount of technical work we do at step two changes.

Message us on WhatsApp with whatever exists: a sketch, screenshots, a garment, or a written description. We ask about garment type, fabric, decoration, sizes and quantity, then come back with a tailored quote. Asking costs nothing, and changes to a quote are always free.

2. We Turn It Into a Spec

Your References Become Measurements

Once the quote is agreed we do the technical work: pattern development and size grading. This is where a saved screenshot becomes a point of measure, a seam finish and a bill of materials. You confirm the decisions that change how the garment feels, and we explain each one rather than sending you away to research it.

3. Fabric and Finishing

Sourced For Your Order, Not Off a Shelf

Nothing is pulled from stock. Fabric is sourced or custom-dyed for your order, with Pantone colour matching where you need an exact brand colour. Decoration is planned in now: embroidery, screen printing, sublimation, DTF, chenille patches or acid wash, along with custom labels, woven tags and trims.

4. Your Sample

The Part That Replaces the Paperwork

Your sample is made in 2-3 weeks. You hold it, wear it and judge it, which is a far better test than reading a spreadsheet. A free sample of each design is included with every committed bulk order; a standalone sample without a bulk commitment is charged. One sample revision round is free, and further revisions are chargeable.

5. Bulk, Quality Control and Shipping

Your Approved Sample Is the Blueprint

After you approve the sample, bulk production takes 3-8 weeks, plus shipping. Every piece is cut, stitched and finished by hand against your approved sample, then passes four stages of quality control - fabric inspection, in-process checks, post-production inspection and a final pre-shipment review - before it ships worldwide.

The Honest Trade-Off

You do not need a tech pack. But detail you send early is detail we do not have to interpret later, and interpretation costs sample rounds.

Send one line of description and we will still make you a sample. It will be our best reading of what you meant, and on a simple garment that is often close. Send reference images with notes, a fabric weight and the measurements of a fit you already own, and the first sample lands much nearer the garment in your head.

One sample revision round is free with every order. Further sample revisions are chargeable, and each one adds time to the schedule as well as cost. Changes to your quote work the other way round: they are always free, so adjust quantities, fabrics and finishing as much as you like before you commit to anything.

The practical version: spend an hour gathering references before you message us. It is the cheapest hour in the whole project.
