The cost to make a hoodie is set by the specification, not by the word hoodie, which is why a serious manufacturer will not publish a price list. Costs arrive in two families. One-off costs per style, meaning pattern drafting, grading, the marker, sampling, screens burned and artwork digitised, are paid once however many pieces follow. Per-unit costs, meaning fabric consumed, trims, cutting, sewing, decoration and finishing, repeat on every single garment. Fabric weight moves the first number, the count of sewing operations moves the second, and run length decides how thinly the one-off costs spread.

Why there is no hoodie price list
Hoodie is a silhouette, not a specification. The word covers a light unbrushed French terry pullover with one flat colour printed on the chest. It also covers a 480 GSM brushed-back fleece zip-through with a gusseted three-panel hood, a jersey-lined hood, tipped drawcords, branded hardware, a woven hem tab, an embroidered chest and a garment wash. Both are hoodies. They are not the same job, and the gap between what they cost to make is several times over, not a few percent.
A published price list has to pick one of those garments and present it as all of them. In practice it picks the simplest, because that is the number that wins the click, and then the real figure arrives later once everything the list left out has been added back. That is a sales tactic rather than a price.
There is a second reason, and it is less cynical. Knitted cloth is bought by weight from mills whose yarn prices move. Dye lots have minimum weights. Trims come from suppliers with their own minimums and their own lead times. A figure published in January is wrong by summer, and a factory that leaves it up is either not costing carefully or is selling blanks rather than making garments.
What you can have instead, and what is more useful anyway, is the structure underneath a quote. Once you can see which lines are paid once and which repeat on every piece, you can read your own quote, work out why two suppliers differ, and change the specification deliberately instead of haggling.
One-off costs against per-unit costs
Every cost on a hoodie belongs to one of two families, and confusing them is the most common mistake in a first production budget.

Read the middle column and the shape of the whole thing appears. The first six rows do not care whether you make fifty pieces or five hundred. The rest repeat every time a garment is made. How fabric weight becomes a fabric bill
Knitted cloth is bought by the kilogram, not by the metre. That one fact explains most of the fabric line on a hoodie quote.
Start with area. Every pattern piece in the garment, meaning the front, the back, two sleeves, the hood panels, the pocket, plus the rib for cuffs and hem, covers a certain number of square metres of cloth. GSM is grams per square metre. Multiply the area by the GSM and you have the weight of cloth inside one hoodie. Multiply that by the run and you have what the factory has to buy before anyone cuts anything.
So the relationship is close to linear. The same pattern in 450 GSM fleece rather than 320 GSM terry is not slightly more fabric. It is that ratio more fabric, on every single piece, before the price per kilogram is even discussed. Two things sit on top of that. The first is the area itself, which is a design decision rather than a fabric one. An oversized body with a dropped shoulder, a long sleeve and a deep hood covers more square metres than a fitted body with a set-in sleeve. Fit changes fabric consumption before fabric does.
The second is waste. The marker is the nested jigsaw of every pattern piece laid across the width of the roll, and what falls between the pieces is bought and paid for like everything else. A well-nested marker on a helpful roll width loses less. An awkward piece shape or an unhelpful width loses more. You will never see this as a line on a quote, but it is inside the fabric figure.
Then colourways. Each colour is a separate dye lot carrying its own minimum weight, so three colourways of one hoodie behave much more like three fabric orders than one. Splitting a small run across several colours is the quickest way to push a per-unit figure up without changing the garment at all.
Loopback, brushed fleece and the cost of heavier cloth
French terry and brushed-back fleece begin as the same knit. Loopback terry leaves the loops on the inside intact, which is why it looks like neat rows of small loops and holds a crisper line. Fleece has those loops brushed open into a nap that traps air, which is what makes it warmer and softer. Brushing is an additional finishing pass at the mill, so the same cloth costs more finished as fleece than as terry at the same weight.
Then the weight does a second thing that most cost breakdowns miss entirely. It changes the sewing.
- Handling speed. A 480 GSM fleece panel does not feed through a machine the way a 300 GSM terry panel does. Feed pressure, differential feed and stitch length all have to be set for the cloth, and the operator works slower on it.
- Seam bulk. Where four layers meet at the underarm, or where the rib joins the hem at the side seam, heavy fleece stacks into something the machine has to be persuaded through. That is time, and it is where needles break.
- It shows every fault. A slight pucker that is invisible in 280 GSM terry is obvious in 500 GSM fleece, so more pieces come back for rework at the same standard of sewing.
- Nap direction. Brushed cloth has a direction. Cut two panels facing opposite ways and they read as slightly different shades under shop lighting, so the marker has to be laid one-way. A one-way marker nests less efficiently, which uses more cloth on top of the extra weight.
- Threads and allowances. Heavier cloth wants heavier thread, often a wider seam allowance, and sometimes a different stitch at the joins.
So a heavier hoodie raises the fabric bill and the labour on the same pattern. It is worth knowing that before choosing weight for its own sake. Above roughly 550 GSM you start fighting the cloth: seams get bulky, cuffs stop recovering, and embroidery becomes harder to register cleanly.
How many sewing operations a hoodie really is
A hoodie seems simple because it can be described in one sentence. On the floor it is a sequence of separate operations, each one a machine, a setting and a person. On a plain pullover, roughly in order:
- Cut room. Spread the lay, cut the marker, bundle and number the pieces by size, and stabilise anything that needs it.
- Hood. Join the hood panels, attach the lining if there is one, finish or bind the hood opening, topstitch it, then set the eyelets or work the buttonholes.
- Pocket. Hem both hand openings, position and attach the pocket to the front, then bartack all four corners of the openings, because the top of each opening is where a hoodie tears first.
- Body. Join both shoulder seams, tape across the back neck, set both sleeves, then close the side and underarm seams.
- Rib. Close both cuff ribs and the hem rib into loops, then attach two cuffs and the hem, easing the narrower rib evenly onto the wider panel.
- Neck. Set the hood into the neckline and cover that seam with tape or a facing.
- Labels and cord. Attach the neck label, attach the care label, thread the drawcord.
- Finish. Trim threads, turn, inspect, press, fold, tag, bag.
Counted as a factory counts them, that list runs past twenty-five operations before packing, and every one is repeated on every garment in the run. It is why construction moves a quote further than people expect. A gusseted three-panel hood is more pieces to cut and more seams to join than a two-panel one. A jersey-lined hood is effectively a second hood. Contrast panels split one panel into two and add a seam. Taped seams, coverstitched hems, welt pockets and extra zipped pockets are all additional operations, repeated on every piece.
Why a zip hoodie costs more than a pullover
A zip-through is not a pullover with a zip added at the end. It is a different garment from the cut room onwards.
- The front is two panels instead of one, so there is an extra piece to cut and an extra long edge to finish.
- The zip is attached to both front edges, usually with a facing or placket behind it, then topstitched so it lies flat rather than rippling. Zip insertion is one of the operations most likely to be redone.
- Zip length changes with size. A pullover uses the same trims across the whole range. A zip hoodie needs a different zip length for every size, so the trim order becomes a size-by-size order, each line with its own minimum.
- The hem rib is no longer a continuous loop. Both ends have to be finished and closed cleanly where they meet the zip.
- A kangaroo pocket cannot cross a zip, so it becomes two separate pockets, and that operation happens twice.
- The hood sets differently. The two hood edges must meet exactly at the top of the zip, and rib, stripes or panel seams have to line up across the zip on both sides. That is an inspection point, and inspection points create rework.
None of it is exotic. It is more work per garment on every garment, plus a more expensive trim bought in more variants. When a zip hoodie and a pullover come back at noticeably different figures, that is what the difference is made of.
Trims, drawcords and branding
Trims are the part of a hoodie people specify last and are surprised by first. Individually they are small. Together they are a real share of the per-unit figure, and several of them carry one-off costs and minimums of their own.
- Drawcord. Flat or round, width, fibre, and whether it is dyed to match the body or deliberately contrast. A cord dyed to your colour is a small dye lot with a minimum.
- Tipped ends. Metal tips, moulded tips or a branded cord end are a separate component and a separate operation. A custom tip is a tooled part, so a mould is made once and then a minimum quantity is ordered.
- Eyelets or buttonholes. Metal eyelets are hardware plus a punching operation. What matters more is what sits behind them. Set into single-layer fleece an eyelet pulls out, so it needs a reinforcing facing, which is another piece cut and another step sewn.
- Woven and printed labels. A custom woven neck label is a loom setup paid once, then a minimum quantity that is usually larger than a 50-piece run needs. Care labels carry legally required content, so they exist whether you brand them or not.
- Woven tabs and flag labels. A tab at the hem or on the sleeve is a bought component plus a positioning and stitching operation on every piece, with a tight tolerance, because a crooked tab is visible from across a room.
- Rubber and silicone patches. A moulded patch needs a mould made, which is a one-off, and then an application step on each garment.
- Custom hardware. Branded zip pullers, cord ends and aglets are tooled parts with their own minimum runs and their own lead times, which often sit outside the garment lead time.
- Packaging. Polybag, swing tag, the string or tag pin, and the carton. Each is a bought item and a packing step.
One rule matters more than the rest. A trim minimum larger than your garment quantity means you buy more than you use. That is not wasted if you reorder, because the balance waits for the next run, but it loads the first one. On a first drop it is usually better to brand one thing properly than five things thinly.
Run length and the size curve
Run length is the largest lever you have that does not change the garment at all.
Every one-off cost divides across the pieces that follow it. Pattern, grading, marker, sample, screens, digitising: paid once, then spread across fifty pieces or five hundred. Two other things help as the run grows. Cutting a deeper lay takes barely more time than a shallow one, so the cutting cost per piece falls. And a line that has made the same garment a hundred times is faster than a line making the first ten, because the operators have settled into the sequence.
The curve flattens, though, and it is worth knowing where. The steepest fall is between the minimum and a few hundred pieces, while the one-off costs are still a large share of the total. Beyond that, most of the per-unit figure is cloth, trims and machine time, and none of those get cheaper by being repeated. Doubling a large run does not halve anything. Ordering more than you can sell is the most expensive way there is to reduce a per-unit cost.
Why the size curve matters
The size curve is how a run splits across sizes, and it is a cost line rather than a formality.
- Cloth. A 3XL uses meaningfully more cloth than an XS. A quote is calculated on an assumed average consumption across the curve, so a split that skews large raises the average.
- Grading. Every extra size is another graded set of pattern pieces and another set of pieces on the marker. A four-size range and an eight-size range are not the same pattern job.
- Lay depth. Spread a small run thinly across many sizes and each size becomes a short lay, which is less efficient to cut than a deep one.
- Unsold stock. The real cost, and the biggest one. Pieces left in sizes nobody bought are money that does not come back, which is why a narrow honest size range beats a wide hopeful one on a first run.
Send the split you actually expect rather than only a total. A quote calculated against a realistic curve is a quote you can hold someone to.
Cost drivers, and which way each one pushes
The same drivers appear on every hoodie quote. What changes is how hard each one is pushing on yours.

What moves a quote up or down
A quote is a calculation, so it responds to inputs. If a figure comes back higher than expected, these are the inputs worth changing, roughly in order of how far each one moves it.
- Quantity. Spreads every one-off cost. Nothing else moves a per-unit figure as far.
- Colourway count. Consolidating three colourways into one or two removes whole dye lots and setups without touching the design.
- Fabric weight. Coming down a band lowers the cloth consumed and the sewing time together.
- Decoration method. Screen printing is heavy on setup and light per piece. DTF and DTG carry almost no setup and a flat cost per piece. So the cheapest method at the minimum is often not the cheapest at scale, and it is worth asking for both.
- Placement count. A chest hit, a back print and two sleeves are four handling steps on every garment. Removing one removes it from the whole run.
- Custom trims. Branding one detail properly instead of every detail lightly.
Some things should be changed last or not at all. The bartacks at the pocket corners, the reinforcement behind the eyelets and the seam finishes are what decide whether the garment survives being worn, and they are a small share of the total. Rib needs enough elastane to recover, or the hem flares after three washes and the garment comes back. And approving a fit from a photograph rather than a physical sample is the most expensive saving in this article, because a fit fault repeats across every piece in the run.
Quotes move upwards for honest reasons too: an added colourway, an added placement, a step up in weight, a garment wash, custom hardware, a wider size range, a rush slot. None of those is wrong. They should just be decisions rather than surprises, which is what a written specification is for.
